That Won the War”. This Iron Mar- vel, built in 1942, has been restored to its original condition. LST 325 is the only ship of its kind that is fully operational in the United States.

A group of volunteers’ crew and conduct tours of the LST 325 during its visit and some frequently asked questions are as follows:

How long is the ship? 328 feet

How wide is the ship? 50 feet

How much water is needed to float it? It needs 4 feet forward and 9 feet aft

What’s the height to top of mast? 65 ft.

How big are its main engines? Two GM V-12 Diesels #12-576ATL developing 900 HP each,

What is the Tank deck capacity?  20 Sherman tanks

How fast can it go Only 12 MPH

How many anchors does it have? 1 Navy anchor at bow plus spare & 1 Danforth anchor at stern plus spare

What was the construction cost?    $ 1.4 million

How many on the Crew during wartime? 100 enlisted & 10 officers

How many LSTs were made?    1,051 in 17 shipyards – 30% were built in Seneca, IL and Evansville, IN. There were never enough LSTs during the war.

In his book about the greatest generation, Tom Brokaw recalled that with honor, determination, sweat and a factor he called “American ingenuity” this ship was retrieved against great odds, then sailed back to

America, refurbished and restored to its original condition.
