Sumner County Health Committee is set to host its first-ever Blueway 5K Poker Run on July 26, a one-of-a-kind event that utilizes motorless transport that brings together kayaking, paddleboarding, canoeing, and community fun. Unlike traditional 5K races, the Blueway 5K isn’t about speed or competition—it’s about enjoying the journey. Participants will paddle along a designated route, soaking in the beauty of Old Hickory Lake and experiencing the joy of being on the water.
Adding an extra layer of excitement, the event will feature a poker run. Kayakers, canoers, and paddleboarders will stop at designated points along the course to draw cards, with some lucky participants winning cash prizes! “The poker run adds a fun challenge and a bit of friendly competition. Unlike traditional poker runs, this event is motorless. We envision an armada of canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards moving up and down Drake’s Creek, making for a truly spectacular sight,” says Health Committee member Hal Hendricks.
Beyond the fun, the event supports an important mission. Proceeds will fund a scholarship program for free swim lessons for economically challenged families in Sumner County. “Our beautiful waterways are a blessing, but they also come with risks. Every year there are local incidents involving children who fall into pools or deep water. By providing swim lessons, we hope to prevent future tragedies,” Hendricks explains.
